In a world defined by continuous disruption, organizations and communities must continually adapt to remain relevant and financially sustainable. The LDI advances this work through three interconnected priorities:

• Strengthening Workforce Capability – Building the essential skills, adaptability, and resilience individuals need to succeed in the future of work.
• Enhancing Transformative Thinking – Cultivating curiosity and creativity to generate new solutions and drive meaningful change.
• Expanding Digital Opportunities – Increasing access, digital literacy, and technology skills to broaden opportunities and create brighter futures.

To advance these goals, the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) established the Learning and Development Initiative (LDI), its hub for professional education and workforce development. Launched in 2024, the LDI created FutureWork™, a proprietary ecosystem comprising three interconnected elements:

• FutureWork™ Framework – A nationally recognized, research-backed model spanning six domains: AI Literacy, Data Literacy, Digital Literacy, Agile Thinking, Change Navigation, and Resource Optimization.
• FutureWork™ Inventory – A diagnostic assessment measuring workforce readiness and providing insights to create customized learning pathways.
• FutureWork™ Portfolio – Online, self-paced learning designed to build capability across the six domains.

To date, the LDI has:

• Launched the FutureWork™ AI Capability Series with Ziplines Education, offering career-focused programs that build practical AI capabilities.
• Received a $1 million New Jersey Department of Labor grant for Digital Equity Training.
• Received a Verizon Foundation gift to expand cybersecurity workforce training.
• Received a second $1 million New Jersey Department of Labor grant for Digital Literacy Training.
• Partnered with SHI International Corp. to offer NJIT’s AI Literacy and AI for Educators microcredentials nationwide.
• Served more than 40 clients across industries, including NJ TRANSIT.
• Partnered with Opportunity@Work and joined the Tear the Paper Ceiling Coalition, becoming New Jersey’s only university participating in the national skills-based hiring movement.
• Partnered with Hire Heroes USA to support veterans transitioning to civilian careers.
