The FutureWork™ Framework, developed by NJIT's Learning and Development Initiative (LDI), represents a new standard for workforce readiness in the AI era. The FutureWork™ Framework serves as the intellectual engine for the LDI portfolio of learning products and services to connect people with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed.
The FutureWork™ Framework
The FutureWork™ Framework, developed by Dr. Michael Edmondson and the LDI Team, represents a research-backed paradigm shift in workforce readiness designed specifically for the age of Artificial Intelligence. Synthesized from global research published by the World Economic Forum, McKinsey, LinkedIn, and others, the framework identifies six critical skill domains that are essential for success regardless of an individual's specific career field.
Note: Because of its innovative approach to workforce readiness and education in the age of AI, The 2025 EDUCAUSE Horizon Report: Teaching and Learning Edition included the LDI's Workforce Readiness Model in its Evolving Teaching Practices section.
While traditional workforce models focus on a combination of durable (soft) skills and job-specific technical training, the FutureWork™ model introduces an additional layer of six critical domains necessary to navigate a modern, AI-enabled economy.
These six skill domains can be divided into Technical Domains: AI Literacy, Data Literacy, and Digital Literacy; and Adaptive or Humanistic Domains: Agile Thinking, Change Navigation, and Resource Optimization.
