In the contemporary digital world, we receive information from every corner of our lives. From the moment we wake up until we go to bed, we constantly observe and process information. Yet our minds can only retain a small share of what we encounter. The limiting factor is not information; it’s attention.
Leaders should not over-communicate but instead distill information in a way that is easy to remember and apply. This is difficult work, but essential.
Here are three strategies to capture attention and reduce noise:
- Leaders should aim to Filter Out the Noise: Modern organizations do not fail due to a lack of information but because attention is scarce. Leaders who simplify and structure information outperform those who add more noise. Generative AI amplifies this problem by producing more content than teams can
process meaningfully. Leadership takeaway: Good leaders curate and distill. They turn complex signals into simple guidance. Just as households respond only to clear Federal Reserve signals, teams respond only to clear leadership signals
(Arteaga, 2026). - Leaders need to Identify the Noise by Focusing on Project Goals: This focus is critical for distilling and choosing the essential information. For example, discussing the economy can involve hundreds of indicators, but only a handful affect your business or sales cycle. The same is true inside organizations: focus attention on the few metrics or decisions that drive outcomes. This discipline makes information easier to retain and act on.
- Leaders need to Be Clear, Concise, and Consistent: We live in a world where capturing attention is challenging. Managers can conduct interactive sessions without involving technology. For instance, we once held a communication session without phones or laptops, which helped participants focus and engage in discussions about effective communication. Removing distractions creates space for people to focus, absorb, and participate. Clarity and consistency amplify each other; repeated, simple messages are far more likely to
stick.
By implementing these strategies, leaders can improve their effectiveness and help their teams navigate the noise of the modern information landscape.
