Today, March 28th, we celebrate AI Literacy Day, a moment to recognize the importance of understanding and navigating the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence. AI literacy, according to Digital Promise, is "the knowledge and skills that enable humans to critically understand, evaluate, and use AI systems and tools to safely and ethically participate in an increasingly digital world." This understanding is no longer optional; it's essential.
To empower learners and educators on this journey, we're thrilled to announce the upcoming launch of our comprehensive AI Literacy Microcredential expected to launch in Spring 2025. This fully online, self-paced program, which yields digital badging from NJIT, will equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven world. Spanning 10 courses, each under two hours, this program is designed to be accessible and impactful. It's structured into three key units: Foundations of AI, Effective and Responsible Use of AI, and Technical Aspects of AI. Upon completion, participants receive NJIT-issued digital badges, validating their expertise.
AI Literacy Day also promotes digital inclusion and equity. It emphasizes the importance of understanding AI for all internet users as AI becomes increasingly integrated into digital tools. According to Digital Inclusion, AI literacy is essential for responsible technology use, helping individuals understand AI's limitations and potential biases. Organizations like NDIA (National Digital Inclusion Alliance) provide resources, including blog posts, webinars, and materials for educators and policymakers, to support AI literacy.
To this end, NJIT will also be offering a 3 course “AI for Educators” program. This fully online, self-paced program, designed to be completed in approximately six hours, will empower educators to confidently navigate the AI landscape. The microcredential will cover essential topics: foundational AI concepts, ethical considerations, and academic integrity in Course 1; practical application of AI in instructional design, engagement, and student progress monitoring in Course 2; and the streamlining of administrative tasks through AI-assisted grading, communication, and task management in Course 3. Upon completion, participants will receive a NJIT-issued digital badge, validating their ability to integrate AI effectively and responsibly into their educational practices. Become part of AI Literacy Day by leveling up your skills, whether you are a professional, educator, or student!
