Project Management in Healthcare Series
A four-part, self-paced, fully online certificate program for anyone interested in upskilling in healthcare project management.
For those working in healthcare, every day requires the juggling of multiple priorities - from patient care to administrative tasks. While only some staff members may have Project Manager in their title, everyone manages complex projects … sometimes without even realizing it. Whether it is implementing a new EMR feature, streamlining clinic workflows, or coordinating interdepartmental initiatives, these are all projects that benefit from structured management approaches.
This course series will equip you with practical project management skills tailored to healthcare's unique challenges. Participants will learn to deliver results while navigating clinical priorities, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder needs. The series will focus on real-world healthcare scenarios, not abstract concepts or rigid methodologies, so that daily chaos can be transformed into coordinated success.
The Project Management in Health Care Microcredential is a series of four courses available to those looking to increase their understanding of project management terms, tools, and processes in a health care setting. Each course in the series is a two-hour, online, self-paced course. At the end of each course, learners will receive a certificate of completion. Once learners have completed all four courses, they will receive a digital badge acknowledging the microcredential.
(NOTE: Although the courses build on key project management concepts informed by the Project Management Institute and its body of knowledge, these courses do not fulfill the training requirements for PMP certification.)
Course 1: An Introduction to Project Management in Healthcare (click here to enroll)
- The first course in the series explores the foundational principles and best practices of project management, tailored specifically to the healthcare industry. In today’s fast-paced environment, strong project management skills are essential to delivering successful projects that meet objectives, stay on budget, and ensure stakeholder satisfaction. Throughout this course, you will learn how to plan, execute, and manage projects, using real-world healthcare examples and interactive activities to bring key concepts to life. Whether you are new to project management or looking to enhance your skills, this course will provide you with valuable insights to navigate the complexities of managing healthcare projects.
Course 2: Intermediate Project Management in Healthcare (coming Spring 2025)
- This course will build on the Introduction to Project Management in Healthcare course. The course will begin with a review of the project life cycle and corresponding Knowledge Area and the launch into the concept of Integration Management and its interconnection to the Knowledge Areas. Once learners have solidified their grasp of the project management process, the course will then focus heavily on how to manage the quality, risk, and procurement management elements of a project, in relation to the scope, schedule and cost concepts discussed in the Introductory course. There will be a focus on healthcare in the content in both the activities and the examples provided.
Course 3: Advanced Project Management in Healthcare (coming Spring 2025)
- This course will build on the Introduction to Project Management in Healthcare and Intermediate Project Management in Healthcare courses. Again, the course will remind learners of the project life cycle and its associated knowledge areas. However, this course will then focus on how to master the resource, communication and stakeholder management elements of a project, often the more complex drivers of project success due to the interpersonal nature of team dynamics and stakeholder interests. There will be a focus on healthcare in the content in both the activities and the examples provided.
Course 4: Agile Strategy for Project Management in Healthcare (coming Spring 2025)
- Once learners have built and strengthened their knowledge of general project management elements by completing the first three courses of the series, they will dig into the concept of Agile Project Management. Agile project management is an iterative approach that emphasizes flexibility, collaboration, and continuous customer feedback throughout a project. Learners will see how agile differs from traditional project management, understand various Agile frameworks, and complete a successful project sprint. There will be a focus on healthcare in the content in both the activities and the examples provided.
